CCTV systems have come a long way over the last 30 years, gone are the days of adjusting the beam current and target voltage on tube based cameras to coax a picture from them after a few years service. Gone but not missed are procedures such as having to solder every joint. Welcome in the advantages of the CCD chip providing huge leaps forward in terms of quality of picture, uniformity, reliability and lowering maintenance. In addition recording technology has improved out of all recognition, having worked on systems using open reel recorders loaded with 50mm tape with a recording capacity of just 20 minutes I now read specifications for DVR's which go beyond anything I could have dreamed for at the time, typically professional systems are now offering Dual Processor power, 400fps recording which will record up to 16 cameras in real time, and include a DVD quality recording mode which will record up to 4 cameras in real time at full DVD resolution (720x576), and will also record audio digitally from up to 16 cameras. Lighting has seen similar improvements, back then you needed two 500W projectors to provide illumination for a 6:1 zoom lens camera, lighting was provided by halogen bulbs which typically lasted 1000 - 1500 hours (4 - 6 months) between replacement, now we have infra-red LED lighting which far exceeds the capabilities of these older units, using far less power, generating only a tiny fraction of the heat and lasting up to 10 years!
