| Glossary of TermsAccess Level - which door/group of doors you are programmed for access. Active Card - an access control card which is powered by an integral battery. Usually for longer distance reading. Anti-Passback (APB) - a facility set on access control systems where cards cannot be read consecutively at IN or OUT readers - a card must go OUT before coming IN again. Biometric - uses part of the human body for identification of user - fingerprint, retina, voice etc. Card Number - the number programmed into a card. Clock & Data - a card format/protocol for communication. Coercivity - describes the resilience of a magstripe card. Door Forced - alarm generated when a door is forced open without the use of a card. Door Held Open - alarm generated following a valid card read, but door prevented from closing again. Door Loop - product to take cable from frame to door leaf. Fail-Safe (fail unlocked) - term for a lock which requires removal of power to unlock. Specified by Fire Officers. Fail Secure (fail locked) - term for a lock which requires power to be applied to unlock. Hands-Free - use of long-range readers with active tags to monitor/control personnel. Hi Co - High Coercivity of magnetic stripe card. Means this type of card is more resistant to data disruption. ISO Cards - a card with the same dimensions as a standard credit card. Suitable for direct printing. Keyfob (Tag) - a proximity tag in a form which can be fixed onto a key ring.. LAN - Local Area Network. An IT data communications network which can be utilised for PC to controller communications. MiFare - a Smart Card chip, which can contain various access control information on the card/keyfob. Monitored - a signal/switch which changes state depending on position of lock/door. Magstripe - low security access control card. Modem - a device used to transmit data from one site/location to another, via telecom. Online - an Access Control System where controllers (doors) are connected to a PC via a data bus. Passive Card/Tag - a proximity/smart device which does not require an internal battery. PIN - Personal Identification Number. A unique number used for keypad access. Proximity - a contactless card/reader technology. PSTN - Public Service Telephone Network Release - an Electric Strike. RIM Release - a surface Electric Strike. RTE - Request To Exit device (usually a button). Shearlock - a magnetic lock fitted with a locking pin, to allow installation into the door transom. Site Code - part of a card number which is specific to a particular site. Smart Card - a card (or tag), which contains a microprocessor and memory. Solenoid Bolt - an electric locking device which “throws” a solid bolt. Standalone - an access control system which is programmed individually per door, and is not connected to a PC. Strike - an Electric Release. T&A - Time & Attendance. Employees time on site. TCP/IP - Protocol which allows the sharing and distribution of data to and from computers over an office LAN or the Internet. Tailgating - entering a secure area by following an authorised user through a door/barrier. Timezone - a period of time which can be given to a cardholder to grant access. Track 2 - the normal track on a magnetic stripe card which is used for access control data. Wiegand - an industry standard form of card technology. Usually specified in a 26-bit form.
